Franco Skugor beats Daniel Yoo in the second round of qualifying draw at the U.S Men’s Clay Court Championships
Croatia’s Franco Skugor rose up to the occasion as he defeated Daniel Yoo of South Korea in three straight sets 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 in the qualifying draw of the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships at Houston
He now moves on ahead to face Alex Bogomolov Jr. of United States in the next round of the tournament. The Croat’s last performance here came in 2008, though he failed to make it through to the second round of the qualifying draw.
The Croat kept his dominion right from the beginning till the end. The match saw total five aces, four of them coming from the Croat. Moreover he maintained a better conversion rate during the course of match with 86 per cent serves
as compared to his opponents 58 per cent. The South Korean kept spilling out double faults which became the solid reason of his failure in the match; his double faults count for the match was four.
In the first set, both players displayed good quality tennis as Skugor won 85 per cent on first serves while Yoo yielded 76 per cent points on conversion. However, things did not go as Skugor had hoped; he failed to save a single
break point opportunity whereas the South Korean managed to save 100 per cent of his and clutched the first set with a 6-4 score.
The second set was governed by the Croat, who raced to a lopsided victory with a bagel win. He delivered 56 per cent of the first serves and gained an outstanding 80 per cent points on them.
The final set saw Skugor landing in 3 aces and 50 per cent first serves, converting 92 per cent on it as he cemented the final set 6-2. The South Korean crafted 4 out 6 break point opportunities and converted 60 per cent on his
first serves but to no avail as the Croat had already taken a 2-1 lead over his lower ranked opponent.
