WAAC-NI’s Frank Chen and GOST-NI’s Mitchell Phelps clinched gold medal of Boys 50-yard freestyle in their relevant age categories at the 2011 Whitney Point Swim Club (WPSC) Holiday Sprints on Thursday, December 29, 2011.
Chen earned the title in 15 and above age group while Phelps won gold medal in 13-14 years old category.
The 16-year-old Chen, who obtained silver medal of the 50-yard backstroke swim, elevated his efforts in the freestyle playoff and cemented his place on top of the victory stand for gold medal with a timing of 53.82 seconds. He was followed by Jacob L Mendelson
of GOST-NI, who remained slightly behind him and hit the wall with an effort of 53.85 seconds for silver medal. The 18-year-old Mendelson remained prominently away from his closest competitor, Robert J Hill of NTAQ-NI, who completed his race with a timing

In the meantime, the spectators viewed a laudable effort of Phelps in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke events. Initially, the 13-year-old Phelps shattered hopes of his challenger in the freestyle discipline, where he posted a time of 57.11
seconds for gold medal. He remained 1.03 seconds ahead of WAAC-NI’s Bryan M Solomon, who followed his lead on the victory stand for silver medal by concluding his race in a timing of 58.14 seconds. Nathan E Cotner was awarded bronze medal as he produced an
effort of 58.85 seconds.
Subsequently, Phelps once again appeared on the starting blocks for the title of 100-yard backstroke. This time, he ousted his opponents with a 1 minute and 02.87 seconds effort. He remained 1.27 seconds away from his following swimmer, Dylan J Richmond,
who hit the finishing blockade with a timing of 1 minute and 04.14 seconds. The third spot of the race was secured by Phelps’s teammate, Matthew L Doppel, who stayed 3.03 seconds slower than his former finisher and posted a time of 1 minute and 07.17 seconds.
The session came to an end after the conclusion of all scheduled events in Boys category whereas the crowd acknowledged furious efforts of all teenage swimmers. Furthermore, the winners were invited on medal rostrum at the medal ceremony of the championship.
