Frank Kassela wins 2010 World Series of Poker Player of the Year award
When Michael Mizrachi was eliminated from the World Series of Poker World Championship event in fifth place, Frank Kassela secured the title of 2010 WSOP Player of the Year.
Had Mizrachi won the final event of this year's WSOP he would have tied Kassela for the Player of the Year title, something that has not occurred since the awards inception in 2004.
The Player of the Year award is determined by a points system, which is based on a player’s finish in any WSOP open bracelet event for the year. At the end of the WSOP, Kassela had 290
points, while Mizrachi stood with 240.
Kassela, who considers himself a professional or semi-pro poker player, depending on the time of the year, accumulated his Player of the Year points by cashing in six events during this
year’s tournament schedule. His biggest point scores were for the two events he won, the $2,500 buy-in Seven Card Razz tournament and the $10,000 buy-in Seven Card Stud Hi-Low Split-8 or Better World Championship.
Kassela’s six cashes netted him $1,225,314 in winnings at this year’s WSOP. In his WSOP career, Kassela has cashed in a total of 12 events for $1420,660.
Kassela had this to say about winning the Player of the Year, “As a poker player, I do not think there is anything you can be more proud of than being the WSOP Player of the Year. This
is where all the best poker players come to play. There is nothing that anyone holds back here at the World Series of Poker. So, if you can come here, not just for a few days, but for a month and a half and be the WSOP Player of the Year, nothing beats it.”
Kassela will receive a  customized gift valued at $25,000 as his Player of the Year award.
