Frank Lampard out for another two Weeks, more injury woes for Blues
Frank Lampard, who was set to make his comeback against Aston Villa over the weekend, has been ruled out for another two weeks following a groin injury. This comes as a big blow to the Blues who were looking forward to his return; the star midfielder has
been out of action since he suffered a hernia problem during the fixture against Stoke City on August 28.
The England international underwent surgery which was a success; he made a full recovery but was rested by Carlo Ancelotti, who said he did not want to risk playing him early. Such is the importance of Frank Lampard for the Blues; he has been instrumental
to their success over the past few seasons. However, the groin strain he recently suffered threatens to keep him out longer than anyone had hoped.
Two weeks means Lampard will not only miss the clash against Aston Villa, but the Champions League fixture against Spartak Moscow and then the Premier League fixture against Wolves at Stamford Bridge. The upcoming fixtures are important because the Blues
have a four point lead, which they will hope to maintain especially through this difficult period when they are without so many important players.
Ancelotti’s side have already been rocked with the unfortunate news of the unavailability of Yossi Benayoun, who has been sidelined with an Achilles injury. The former Liverpool player felt discomfort during the loss to Newcastle in the Carling Cup fixture,
but it was aggravated while he was on national duty with Israel. He is set to have surgery on Monday and the earliest he can return is after six months.
Centre backs Alex and John Terry are also out with injuries, their return for the Aston Villa fixture is doubtful. Alex was the inspiration in the 2-0 win over London rivals Arsenal, the Brazilian defender was exceptional throughout the match but his man
of the match moment came when his fire bolt of a free kick hit the back of the net. However, he suffered an injury during the same match and there is no news as to when he will return.
Captain John Terry is also a big doubt for the weekend’s fixture, he is a player known to play with injuries but the England international withdrew from the 2012 Euro qualifier against Montenegro. The Chelsea captain complained of back pain, he will most
likely be rested since the extent of his back injury is not known. Ancelotti will be wise to rest him along with Lampard, so both are fully fit when they make their comeback.
