The 33-year-old midfielder had recently expressed his frustration at the lack of first team football after which he was linked with a move to Premier League rivals Manchester United. However, the Red Devils manager dismissed the rumours and Di Matteo went
on to confirm that Lampard would remain with the Blues.
Manager Andre Villas-Boas has left Lampard out of the starting squad on various occasions, choosing to bring him on as a substitute instead. The English midfielder has still managed to show his worth by scoring in important fixtures and awarding his side
the win.
According to Di Matteo, Lampard was an important part of the club and there was no way he was leaving Stamford Bridge any time soon. The assistant manager believed the former West Ham United man was still a part of the club’s future plans.
Di Matteo said while speaking to reporters:
“I can't see him leaving this club.
He has been here for 10 years and he's part of the successful history of this club.
I don't know what the future will hold but I can't see him going anywhere, he is part of our plans and important for us.”
Di Matteo insisted the Blues were happy to have Lampard in their squad, especially since he had performed season after season. He revealed they weren’t surprised that he had been linked with a move away but were certain he would deal with the rumours in
an appropriate way.
He said he was hopeful the midfielder would take the rumours in a positive way and continue towards improving and working hard for the Blues this season.
He continued:
“We are very happy Frank is in our team. He's a fantastic player and has been a fantastic player season after season for this club and for his country.
It is not a surprise other managers like him. It is not (unsettling) for us. He's old enough to deal with these kind of stories and so are we.”
