Frank Lampard will miss Fulham game
Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed midfield player Frank Lampard will miss the mid-week Premier League game against local rivals Fulham.
Lampard has been sidelined since virtually the start of the season because of the recovery period after a hernia operation. Michael Essien looks set to come into the side.
"Frank Lampard will not be fit for Wednesday but I hope he will be back for Sunderland.
Our moment is good and we have to look forward to the next game against Fulham," said the Chelsea boss.
Chelsea is fortunate to have such a wealth of cover players for when key individuals get injured or suspended. However, a fit Frank Lampard will add a great deal to any
team.
Cover players
Michael Essien is a very aggressive player and a midfielder who is comfortable in possession. Sometimes Chelsea needs a calming influence in the middle of the team and
Essien will provide this with his ball control.
Jon Obi Mikel can also carry a similar presence in the Chelsea midfield to Lampard. Mikel plays a more defensive role in the team but he is physically intimidating and
equally good on the ball.
Chelsea has done well to come out with this statement early. Lampard can now rest up and be fully fit for the match against Sunderland this weekend. He will add an extra
attacking element to the Chelsea team upon his return.
Lampard will also inject a great deal of experience into the side, which has been missing. For example, Lampard would have been crucial in keeping the team organised and
efficient during the defeat to Liverpool last Sunday.
"We are in the better position compared to the other teams [more cover players].
Psychologically it can happen to lose a game but we are top of the table and we have to win the next game," added Ancelotti.
