Former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf has revealed he believes Roberto Di Matteo is the obvious choice for the manager’s position at the London club.
After a month of speculation regarding his future at the club, the Italian boss has emerged as the favourite to take up the manager’s position. It was Di Matteo who led Chelsea to their first ever UEFA Champions League trophy, along with the FA Cup in a
season that was considered to be their worst.
Roberto Di Matteo took over from young Portuguese manager Andre Villas-Boas in March when the latter was sacked after a string of poor results. Since taking over Di Matteo did well in the cup competitions but even he couldn’t improve their form or standing
in the English Premier League.
However, he did bring something new to the struggling Chelsea side. Di Matteo managed to control all the superstars at Stamford Bridge and managed to get results out of them, something Villas-Boas had been unable to do for half a season.
Leboeuf said in an interview:
“He proved in four months that he had knowledge about football and what he did was absolutely fantastic. He used the strengths Chelsea had.
He knew how to cope with the situation with senior players, he put a very good atmosphere into the dressing room, and he won two titles.
They would have been stupid not to offer him at least a year.”
According to the former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 defender, the London side had made the right decision by offering him a new contract, even if it was for just a year. Leboeuf felt Di Matteo needed time to prove himself, which he would have with a new contract.
The Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich seems to agree, as he seems prepared to give Di Matteo a full season in charge to show if he can repeat his success.
He continued:
“We will see what will happen afterwards, because we know [former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roberto-c31294 would have another year to prove he is a good coach.”
