Frank Maloney on David Haye: I have seen only a few boxers who did not make a comeback – Boxing news
Frank Maloney, who managed Lennox Lewis throughout his career, has shared his thoughts over former World Boxing Association World Heavyweight Champion, David Haye, who is planning to make a comeback to face Dr. Ironfist, Vitali Klitschko, who currently holds
the World Boxing Council Heavyweight Championship belt.
Maloney told the media a boxer always comes back to the ring for fame or fortune. He said a boxer makes a comeback because he starts missing all of that.
“Fighters retire with the best intentions but they are in a sport where you are likely to get a lot more bad advice than good,” said Maloney. “Over the years I can think of very few fighters who have retired and stayed retired. There is Lennox, Joe Calzaghe,
Marvin Hagler but, after that, you are struggling. They all want another bite at the cherry.
The Hayemaker, Haye, who held a record of winning 25 of his 27 professional fights, including 23 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, walked away from the sport on his 31st birthday after he lost his battle to Vitali’s younger brother
Wladimir ‘Dr. Steelhammer’ Klitschko in their mega unification bout for the heavyweight titles.
However, Haye has always said he will return to boxing if he gets another shot at any of the Klitschko brothers. Therefore, now he is pondering over a multi-million-pound offer to face Vitali yet Maloney is not certain if the Brit will really get back in
the ring.
“Lennox is a switched-on person and never got sucked back into the sport and, to be fair to Haye, he hasn’t said he will definitely come back,” Maloney added.
Haye versus Wladimir was one of the biggest fights in British history which generated plenty of money for both boxers but it was a humiliating night for the British fans, as Haye was totally out boxed by Wladimir in the ring.
Nevertheless, all that is left to see is whether Vitali will give Haye a chance to face him or not.
