Frank Mir, the former UFC heavyweight champion, is excited at getting a shot at Junior Dos Santos’ title and commented that it is a phenomenal opportunity which has made him extremely happy adding that Santos is a lethal brawler and undoubtedly the best
boxer in the division.
Mir, 32, shared his thoughts in a recent interview and put forth his expert opinion and inside feelings on various matters. Frank has been in a total 21 bouts and boasts 16 wins. Mir is known as one of the best submission specialist in the heavyweight division
and is feared by most.
The former champion and multiple times ‘submission of the night’ award winner, Mir, has nailed many big names in his career such as Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Brock Lesnar, Cheick Kongo and others.
Frank is currently scheduled to take on Santos and will try to grab this opportunity to become the heavyweight champion for the second time. Previously Mir was signed to take on Cain Velasquez but after the stern decision issued by Nevada State Athletic
Commission (NSAC) regarding Alistair Overeem’s case, has left UFC no other choice but to put Frank against the current champion for a five-round showdown.
Overeem was announced guilty by the commission for the use of prohibited performance enhancing drugs and is now facing a nine-month suspension along with the cancellation of the bout-licence.
While sharing his views on Alistair’s decision, Frank commented that Overeem is most probably accused for the very first time adding that the decision should not have been such a stiff one.
Mir was of the view that Overeem is an ace heavyweight brawler who is somewhat a backbone for the promotion and the division. Frank stated, “We’ve all made mistakes professionally or in our personal life that are not our greatest moments in life. To sit
there and ostracize somebody and never allow them to redeem themselves, I think would be very against humanity and our overall impression that I try to carry as a person.”
Mir continued and said that he is happy at getting the title shot so early adding that it is a big relief to skip the bout with Cain Velasquez and take on Dos Santos directly. Mir said that it would have taken almost another year but now things are in his
favour and he will strive hard to get what previously belonged to him.
Frank remarked, “I was extremely happy. It was phenomenal opportunity, earlier than I expected. I thought that I'd have to go through Cain (Velasquez) first. Being given this opportunity right now, I just feel ecstatic. In reality, dos Santos is a much better
boxer. Obviously, he's probably the best boxer in the division.”
Frank and Dos Santos will headline the UFC 146 pay-per-view which will take at MGM Grand Garden Arena situated in Nevada and will be televised on May 26, 2012.
