Frank Mir wants Brendan Schaub, says Brock Lesnar fight can wait
Ultimate Fighting Championships heavyweight mixed martial artist Frank Mir has been calling for a rubber match with Brock Lesnar for over a year, but now that that fight seems to be a possibility, he said
he wants to fight Brendan Schaub instead.
After getting crushed by Lesnar at UFC 100 in July 2009, Mir has raised eyebrows by saying he was “obsessed” with Lesnar, and that he wanted to kill Lesnar in the Octagon. But now that Lesnar was nearly knocked
out by Shane Carwin, and now recently lost his title to Cain Velasquez, a fight seems like a possibility, but on Wednesday Mir shrugged off the possibility when the idea was floated to him by MMASucka.com.
“Honestly right now, probably no. Just because the Carwin fight, he didn't look all that spectacular.”
Mir continued: “And then the Velasquez fight obviously, Velasquez made him basically shout 'Stop, Enough, Enough' before he tapped due to strikes and that looked really bad."
Mir, who was knocked out by Carwin before winning a widely-panned, lacklustre victory over ageing legend Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, said he’d rather fight someone coming off a win in order to boost his own
standing in the division. That might throw the UFC’s plans off, who are rumoured to want to put on a third fight between Lesnar and Mir. Mir previously scored a submission victory over Lesnar in Lesnar’s second professional fight.
One fighter who fits the bill is rising star Brendan Schaub, who recently took a big step up in the division by beating Gabriel Gonzaga. After that fight, Schaub called out Mir as his next desired opponent,
and in the interview Wednesday Mir confirmed that’s a fight he’d be happy to take.
"Roy Nelson is coming off a loss right now, but Brendan Schaub looked very good against Gabriel Gonzaga. That would be a fight, as far as trying to move forward to solidify myself for a title shot."
