Frank Moser stuns Conor Niland qualifying 2nd round – Moselle Open 2011
Seeded at number three in the qualifying draws of the Moselle Open, Conor Niland of Ireland fell to unseeded German competitor, Frank Moser in the second round of the qualifiers on Sunday.
The contest was played on the indoor hard courts of the Arenes de Metz, in Metz, France, with the German contestant registering a convincing straight sets victory 6-3, 6-4, to move into the qualifying competition of the ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 event.
Moser took just 66 minutes of play to outclass the third seeded Niland with utmost ease. The third seed Irish failed to put up any serious resistance against the fury of Moser and crumbled in the second set to let the German away
with a comprehensive victory.
Niland took the better of his opponent in some segments of the game but he kept losing crucial points on regularity to finish on the losing side. The Irish banged 71 per cent serve on target and clinched 27 out of 39 first serve
points in the matchup. He German winner delivered merely 48 per cent of his serve right and secured 20 out of 25 first serve points in the contest to come out as the winner in the end.
Moser had seven break opportunities in the matchup and he cashed in four of them on vital occasions of the competition to drive the third seeded Irish out of the competition. Niland followed him with just two break point conversions,
which were not good enough to take down the aggressive German in the contest.
Moser drew first blood in the fourth game of the opener to lead 3-1 but the third seed Niland retaliated immediately with a serve break to fritter away his advantage in the game. Moser stung his second straight serve break to wrap
up the first set at 6-3, getting the upper hand in the contest early.
Niland took off the second set with a cracking break point conversion in the second game to lead 2-0 but was brought down by the German opponent in the very next game with a serve break. Moser registered his fourth break point
of the day in the ninth game to wrap up his surprise victory in style, 6-4, moving into the qualifying competition of the Moselle Open.
Moser will take on seventh seeded local contestant, Nicolas Renavand, in the next clash to book a place in the main draws of the tournament.
