Frank Pipp and Heather Logan-Sprenger win second stage of 2011 Tour of Gila – Cycling News
Frank Pip of Bissell Pro Cycling team has secured his first National Racing Calendar (NCR) win and also taken the stage two title at the SRAM Tour of the Gila, on the Inner Loop Road Race.
Frank Pipp won the bunch sprint and covered the distance of 128.7 kilometers in 3 hours, 11 minutes and 26 second. Anibal Borrajo of Jamis-Sutter was in second place behind the leader. Stage race leader, Francisco Mancebo of RealCyclists team was in third
spot.
After winning the stage, Frank Pipp said, "We never planned to ride the front, regardless if we had a rider in the move. There was no wind so we wanted to go for the sprint.”
He further added that the sprint was good for Jay Thomson, as the entire team had worked hard and everyone did a great job in the final sprint of the race.
Francisco Mancebo took a lead in the overall classification, with a timing of 7 hours, 10 minutes and 44second. Tyler Wren was in second spot with a difference of 18 seconds. Joes Dombrowski finished third, as he was 39 seconds behind Francisco.
The group of five riders consisting of Joseph Lewis, Ian Holt, Mike Northey, Jay Thomson and Evan Hyde made an early break in the race. After passing the exit of Hwy 180, Joseph Lewis won the first bonus sprint.
The breakaway gained an advantage of one minute, ahead of Pinos Altos. The other two riders, Danny Summerhill and Marsh Cooper crossed the bridged and got a lead against the group of seven riders.
In the KOM competition, Thomas was the first who secured full points, while seven riders stretched their lead to 1 minute and 30 seconds. Mancebo and his team-mate worked hard to maintain their time gap.
After 65 kilometres, Lewis took full points despite of the fact that the second bonus sprint was located roughly. In the final sprint of the race, Tyler Wren tried to cruise past Mancebo but he failed and lost as a result.
Pipp said, "It was a long sprint but it was hard enough, I guess people's legs start to fade, I went earlier then I wanted to but I could see riders coming up on my right and if I waited I would have been pinned."
All the riders move ahead for the next Tyrone Individual Time Trial race to cover the distance of 26.6 kilometres.
