Frank Schleck to lead Team RadioShack-Nissan at the Giro d’ Italia 2012
Team RadioShack-Nissan is having a tough season and despite having numerous high profile cyclists in its panel, it has struggled to make an impact in the earlier part of the season.
The Luxembourg based team is now getting ready for the first Grand Tour race of the season, the Giro d’ Italia 2012.
Frank Schleck will lead the side at the Giro d’ Italia and is positive to help the side with a much needed victory during the event.
While Frank will ride the Giro, his brother Andy Schleck will be seen in action at the Tour de France 2012.
The two brothers rode together at the French Grand Tour and finished at the second and the third overall positions.
Frank has not picked any wins in the season yet and is hopeful to open his winning account at the Italian race.
He cited, “My season was directed at peaking in the Tour, but when you think about it, this situation creates opportunities”.
“For sure, I will come to the start with a different preparation than the other GC riders, but that is not necessarily a bad thing”.
“My condition is not so bad and it can only grow the coming weeks”.
“The Tour of Italy is one of the big monuments of cycling as well, so it is at least a big challenge for me”.
The 32-year-old will replace Jakob Fuglsang at the race as the cyclist has withdrawn from the race after the knee injury.
Team Manager Johan Bruyneel is determined that his team has strong chances of securing the overall spot at the race under the leadership of Schleck.
He noted, “I see a lot of opportunities for Fränk as well as for the team”.
Bruyneel explained that Frank has only been unlucky in the first quarter of the season that have restricted him from achieving the podium spot.
The 95th edition of the Giro d’ Italia is scheduled between May 5-27 and a number of cyclists from across the world are warming up for the coming race.
Frank rode the Giro back in 2005 and finished at the 42nd overall position. It will be interesting to see, if the Luxembourg cyclist can take his performance to the next level and claim the podium during the 2012 edition of Giro d’ Italia 2012.
