Frank Warren says Derek Chisora could become national hero
Big-time British boxing promoter Frank Warren knows the facts are stacked against his fighter Derek Chisora in his upcoming bout with champion Wladimir Klitschko on December 11. Nevertheless, he also knows if Chisora wins, he’ll be a British national hero.
"It's a tough, tough fight for Derek because [Wladimir] Klitschko is the best heavyweight in the world," Warren confessed to Sky Sports. "He's the most dominant in the division and has been since Lennox Lewis. But if desire, heart and guts win fights then
Derek can win. As far as the bookmakers go there are upsets, otherwise the word wouldn't be in the dictionary."
With only 14 professional bouts to his name, Chisora will be a steep underdog against Klitschko, who holds the WBO/IBO/IBF/Ring heavyweight titles. Klitschko (55-3, 49 KOs) is widely considered the top heavyweight in the world, and has not lost a bout since
April of 2004.
Warren indicated that Chisora has the confidence and the heart to topple Klitschko. He said that he wished he had a few more fights and a bit more experience under his belt, but still believes a surprise victory is an possibility.
Chisora occupies something of a unique position given that he signed for a fight with Klitschko British WBA heavyweight titlist David Haye previously turned down. Simply for accepting a fight champion Haye would not, Chisora has earned many fans in the
United Kingdom. In this sense a victory would only compound his position and make him a national hero.
“If he wins he becomes a national hero by getting rid of Wladimir Klitschko," Warren stated.
A contractual clause mandates that should Chisora defeat Klitschko, he will automatically have a chance to unify his titles with a bout against Vitali Klitschko, who currently holds the WBC title. In the event Chisora wins both fights he would hold every
relevant heavyweight title.
