Frank Warren slams David Haye for bringing down boxing
Big-time British boxing promoter does not like WBA heavyweight champion David Haye.
And while that hate is rooted in personal history—Haye decided to sign with Golden Boy instead of Warren when he became a viable boxing superstar—it nevertheless makes for steamy boxing news.
In a latest offering, Warren criticized “The Hayemaker” for his participation in a recent bout with Audley Harrison, saying that the fight was bad for boxing and that Haye was just as much to blame for
the poor outing as Harrison.
Haye-Harrison, which took place at the MEN Arena in Manchester on 13 November, wrapped up with Harrison tasting canvas in the third round. In three rounds Harrison threw a measly one significant punch,
despite being a former Olympic gold medallist.
“[Boxing’s] reputation is a lot bigger than David Haye's, and that was not a good night for boxing," Warren snapped in a Yahoo! Sports interview.
"Thankfully Manny Pacquiao redeemed us (when he overcame Antonio Margarito to claim the vacant WBC super welterweight title) at the end of the night by showing us what true fighters are and what true fighters
do.
"For the credibility of the heavyweight division, we can have no more of these hand-picked opponents by Haye,” Warren said.
Warren wasn’t alone in his criticism. The fight, which provoked something of an outrage amongst boxing fans, initiated a formal investigation by the British Boxing Board of Control. The BBBC continues
to hold a share of Harrison’s one million pounds while they evaluate whether he deserves it.
"David Haye's reputation is on the line here,” Warren continued. “We've got a guy here in Haye who started off saying he was going to fight the best, but he has fought Monte Barrett and Nikolay Valuev,
who is probably the worst heavyweight champion of all time, though I can understand why he did that because Valuev held the title.”
