Frank Wren confronts looming free agency of top outfielder Michael Bourn in offseason-MLB Update
One of the most important tasks that Atlanta Braves’ General Manager Frank Wren will be performing in the days ahead is announcing a decision about centre fielder Michael Bourn.
If the Braves do not make any substantial offer to Bourn, he will most probably test the free agency and may end up playing for some other club next year.
Given the fact that Bourn is among the most reliable outfielders in the Major League, the Braves will more likely not allow him leave the club.
As the season has ended for the Braves, they are looking to prepare for future and construct a formidable offensive line-up for the next year.
Retention of Bourn can go a long way in helping the Braves maintain their offensive strength and have someone in the outfield who can be reliable.
However, the General Manager Wren will be aware of the fact that Bourn had a tremendous season and due to this he will be fancying an extravagant contract.
Meeting the possible expectations of Bourn means that allocating a huge amount of money for him and in turn not caring other areas that also demand attention.
Possible free agency of Bourn is not the only thing that Wren will be addressing. Instead he has scores of issues to deal and tackle effectively ahead.
Chipper Jones’ retirement will lighten burden on the Braves’ budget and will allow them to spend money freely in the offseason.
In this regard, there is a possibility that the money saved from the exclusion of Jones is invested in Bourn by granting him a lucrative offer.
Jones has also hinted that with his absence on the payroll the Braves enjoy a financial leeway. He has emphasised the importance of acquiring quality players by using the money for the Braves.
“I think the Braves need some pieces, but I think Frank will have fun playing with all the money,” Jones said.
Jones wants the Braves to fix issues in their offence and rotation by making an appropriate use of their money.
During the offseason, it can be expected that the Braves unveil their intentions regarding Bourn.
