Frankel shines out as always in his work out at Newmarket
Just when the last performance of the unbeaten colt, Frankel, is on the horizon, even his work outs and preparations for the big day are taking a high in the news circulating among the horse racing fraternity. His thirteen out of thirteen record is already
a marvel and on 20th October at the Royal Ascot race course it will transform into a new record of fourteen from fourteen.
The only racing icon who has managed well beyond this feat is the Australian mare, Black Caviar, but then she is more experienced, and is a sprinter. The top rated miler’s title stays glued to the Galileo’s colt, Frankel.
On Wednesday, 10th October, the ‘Frankel’ team went out at the Rowley Mine, Newmarket for some galloping which turned out to be nothing less than pleasant and pleasing for the eyes of the connections. The regular jockey for the unbeaten colt,
Frankel, set pace on the nearly mile track while riding Midsummer Sun. The work rider, Shane Featherstonhaugh, guided the winner of the multiple Group 1 races through the track.
As easy as breathing, Frankel breezed past his regular jockey and his ride who had set the pace for some good six furlongs, grinding in on the furlongs as he finished nearly dozen lengths ahead of Midsummer Sun.
"This was more informal - he only had one lead horse this time - but he came away nicely clear as he always does," said Teddy Grimthorpe.
"Shane was on Frankel, Tom was on Midsummer Sun and everything went very well, it was a good bit of work and we were all very happy. It's so far, so good."
Besides the surging crowds at Ascot for the Champions Stakes, it is highly likely that the Queen will want at least one of her horses to share track with the magnificent colt in his last race of the career.
Charles Barnett, chief executive at Ascot, said: "We are delighted that The Queen will be coming to Qipco British Champions Day and she will present the trophy for the race named in her honour, the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes."
How many more and which surprise guests will Frankel’s last race pull together will disclose soon.
