Frankie Dettori gets banned due to careless riding at Newbury and misses the second day for the Breeders’ Cup
Frankie Dettori was handed a seven-day ban on 22nd October after riding carelessly at Newbury. This carelessness on the track has cost him to miss the feature day at the Breeders’ Cup.
Frankie Dettori was riding Saeed Bin Suroor’s, Willing Foe. They held up during mid-division. The ride had to edge right when it ran short of clear track over two furlongs out. Travelled really well for the approaching final furlong, the pair finished quite
close to the positioned horses but could not threaten the winner the least.
Willing Foe finished the race fourth with Luca Cumani trained Kirthill winning the race. The winner was soon followed by Pivotman being trained by Amanda Perrett and had Jim Crowley aboard. Luca Cumani’s other entry, Naqshabban finished before Willing Foe.
The reason Frankie Dettori got banned despite parking the ride in the fourth position was because during the second furlong out he stumbled into Harry Bentley’s ride Right Step which led to the jockey getting unseated.
Harry Bentley was chasing the leaders with his ride but weakened when he got hampered and ended up stumbling and being the last one to leave the track that day.
Right Step's jockey Harry Bentley said: “The fall wasn't my fault and was a shock when it happened”.
Dettori said: "I thought there was room to go across, but it didn't work out. At least I can ride Nahrain in America on the Friday”.
Frankie Dettori was not exactly booked for this race but shifted to Newbury only after finding out that his ride for the Racing Post Trophy, Encke was withdrawn from the race.
Frankie Dettori is easily considered to be the best jockey and is also the ‘member of the British Empire’ and such misconduct on his part has received a mixed up reaction as some credit the fall to the British Horseracing Authority’s whipping rule that has
resulted in jockeys getting frustrated specially during the final furlong and then committing such blunders.
Some have gone to an extent that such falls and stumbling should now be expected and of course then there are those who have their sympathies with the losing jockey, Harry Bentley.
Frankie Dettori however will be riding Nahrain for the Filly And Mare Turf at Churchill Downs on Friday 4th November.
