Frankie Dettori to ride Camelot in Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp
Aidan O’Brien’s star colt, Camelot, is on a recovery mission after losing his unbeaten record disappointingly in the Ladbrokes St Leger Stakes at Doncaster last month. The 3-year-old missed a mega opportunity to become the first British Triple Crown winner
since 1970.
It was a massive blow for Camelot’s supporters, but the connections have made plans to bring the glory back to him. After plenty of speculations, O’Brien on Wednesday finally confirmed his superstar’s participation in the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe,
to be hosted by Longchamp this Sunday.
The four-time graded champion is going to meet a few giants of the game in the Group 1 meeting. Camelot, who has run all his races under Joseph O’Brien, will go out with a new rider this time.
The handler has disclosed that Camelot will be ridden by Frankie Dettori, widely regarded as one of the best in business. Joseph, who partnered Camelot on every start to date, has a different horse to take care of. As per the latest plans, the trainer’s
son will be seen on St Nicholas Abbey.
Another twist hit the headlines on Wednesday morning, when the reports suggest that Danedream and Nathaniel are likely to miss the event, along with Snow Fairy. There are rumours circulating in the media that Danedream might make a shock return to the line-up.
However, his camp has not yet confirmed anything. Patrick Barbe, spokesman for part-owner Teruya Yoshida, said on Wednesday afternoon: "I spoke to the owner an hour ago and he didn't mention it. From my side there is no substance in the rumour because of
the travel restrictions on horses in Cologne.
"There is always a possibility, but the chances are one in a million unless the German Jockey Club say they made a mistake."
The absence of Danedream, Nathaniel and the well-fancied Snow Fairy is unlikely to make things any easier for Camelot. Montjeu’s son, who was narrowly beaten by Encke last time, surely needs a special effort in order to get the better of the Arc line-up,
which includes Orfevre, Sea Moon, Masterstroke and St Nicholas Abbey.
