Frankie Edgar: I will not move to featherweight division and will brawl Ben Henderson again – UFC news
Frankie Edgar, the former Ultimate Fighting Championship’s (UFC’s) lightweight champion, has silenced all his critics by announcing he will not move down to the featherweight division adding that he has his eyes focused in taking on Ben Henderson, the current
UFC lightweight champion, in a rematch with title on the line.
Frankie Edgar lost his title in a five-round brutal skirmish with Ben Henderson at UFC 144. Interestingly this was his first loss after a successful and intimidating seven-bout win streak that involves nailing big names such as B. J. Penn and Gray Maynard.
The loss against Ben raised a wave of questions that has been disturbing Frankie for the last few days. The critics and even Dana White, UFC President, has advised Edgar to fall down the division and fight Jose Aldo as it is best for his own career.
Dana in a press conference recently explained the whole scenario and said that lightweight division includes men who have cut from 170-pound weight and are brawling at 155-pound division Frankie, on the other hand is a 154-pounder and practically brawls
against men heavier and powerful then him.
White was of the view that he was not previously eager about this decision since Edgar had been on a winning streak and was producing results adding that even then he put so much effort in the brawls. The UFC executive said that he respects UFC’s underdog
a lot and is advising what is best for him.
Edgar, on the contrary, has denied all these convincing arguments and said that he wants a rematch with Ben Henderson to claim what rightfully belongs to him. Well known as ‘The Answer’, Frankie was of the view that he has already proved what he is capable
of adding that he can brawl at the current weight class and one defeat cannot demoralise him.
Frankie remarked, “I think the rematch makes sense on several levels. Not only can UFC be good guys, I think I earned it. Economically, they’ve been investing money in me. I’ve been at the helm of this weight class for two years now. I think it just makes
sense for them and obviously for me. Let’s do it.”
The 30-year-old former lightweight champion reiterating his determination to stay at lightweight said, “I'm staying at 155. This is where I'm at right now. I still feel like I got a run left. I still want that title back.” Edgar said that he does not want
to take any one’s place and he has earned this rematch by his impressive ability and hard work.
Frankie has been in a total 16 brawls and came out victorious in 14. He has lost just two brawls, one against Gray Maynard and the second recently against Ben.
