Franklin Gutierrez shines as Seattle Mariners defeat Minnesota Twins, 3-0 – MLB Update
Seattle Mariners’ centre-fielder, Franklin Gutierrez had a notable day with the bat as he went 2-for-3 and scored two runs including one RBI hit in the Mariners’ 3-0 win against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field, Minnesota on May 25.
The Mariners won their three-game series 2-1. Gutierrez expressed his excitement as, “I feel good. I just needed time. But now I feel like I'm getting to the point where I was before. I'm just trying to be relaxed. I'm trying to play step by step. I know
it takes time.”
No score was added from both sides in the first inning. The Mariners took their initial 2-0 lead during second inning when Adam Kennedy doubled to right-field and Gutierrez scored his first run. The second run was taken by Kennedy on the drive of Brendan
Ryan towards centre-field.
The third inning passed without a score for both sides. However, in the fourth inning, Gutierrez hit a one-run homer (399 feet) to left-field and led off the Mariners 3-0. The batters were restricted to score a run from the fifth to the ninth inning as the
pitchers threw the ball in perfect line.
The Mariners’ starter Erik Bedard pitched six dominant innings with an ERA of 3.48 and did not permit a run on six hits. He struck out four batters and allowed only one walk on his 96 pitches.
The Mariners’ Manager Eric Wedge had a huge ovation for Bedard. Speaking to reporters, he said, “He's just been very consistent with his fastball and his breaking ball and developing more confidence in his changeup. He has a great heartbeat out there.” The
relievers also threw pretty well for the Mariners as they went score-less in their combined three inning pitches.
Brian Duensing was expensive as he pitched seven innings with an ERA of 4.83 and gave away three runs on four hits including three earned runs. He permitted three walks on his 111 pitches and had six strike-outs. The Twins’ relievers did not allow any run
on their individual pitches.
