The club’s honorary president fears his team’s chances this season following their inconsistent run in recent games.
Franz Beckenbauer feels that Bayern Munich need to find their feet if they want to win trophies this season. He was talking ahead of his team’s league game against Schalke on Sunday, February 26, which will be a must win for Bayern.
The Reds are fresh from a shock 1-0 loss to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Basel-c39079 in the first-leg of the UEFA Champions League knock-out round.
The former defender revealed that Bayern are gradually on the decline and the game against Schalke is immensely important to their chances this season. He urged his players to get things back on track if they aim to lift the Bundesliga
crown. Bayern are currently third on the league standings with 45 points, four short of Borussia Dortmund and two short of second placed, Borussia Monchengladbach.
While talking to sports website, bild.com, the 66-year-old defender further added: "The players must have it hammered home right now: do you want to be second-class internationals or become some of the greats?”
Beckenbauer also urged the players against complacency in the remaining games of the ongoing season. He reckons that Jupp Heynckes is the ideal personality to manage such a side and expressed his confidence in the abilities of
the former Bayer Leverkusen tactician.
"[Christian] Nerlinger, [Karl-Heinz] Rummenigge, [Uli] Hoeness and Heynckes must come together and make the seriousness of the situation clear to the players. The sporting responsibility belongs to Jupp Heynckes, but in him I have
no doubt," Beckenbauer added.
On the other hand, the former West German international criticized http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Philipp-Lahm-c29929 for showing lack of concern over the club’s disappointing form. He opined that the German has failed to make an impact as a decent leader and must
learn from his mistakes. He also compared Lahm to former skipper, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Oliver-c28477 Kahn, whom he feels was an inspirational skipper and motivator.
"[Former captain Oliver] Kahn would have immediately intervened, brought together the players and driven the team forward," The former Hamburger player concluded.
Bayern Munich are next in action against Schalke on Sunday, February 26, and will host FC Basel in the second-leg of the UEFA Champions League on March 13.
