Franz Beckenbauer says Lampard and England robbed of a goal in the World Cup 2010

When England went out of the FIFA World Cup after suffering a 4-1 loss against Germany, everyone knew that the disallowed goal of Frank Lampard was going to stir up a debate that would not die down till FIFA actually start considering the use of technology in the game.

Even though the referee that disallowed the goal has been asked to pack his bags and head home by FIFA, that does not change the fact that England were robbed of a chance to go further in the World Cup.

FIFA was widely criticized from all corners after that incident, and now a legend of the game, Franz Beckenbauer, has said that he sympathises with England, and it was a disgrace to the game looking at the way they were knocked out of the World Cup. Beckenbauer said that it’s high time that FIFA seriously considers using technology in the game.

Beckenbauer has not been the biggest supporter of the England team, and was critical of their tactics in the World Cup, at one stage even saying that England have taken a step back rather than going forward under Capello, claiming them to be a kick and rush team. However, he did not hold back on supporting them when it came to injustice in the game.

Beckenbauer was part of the Germany team back in 1966 when England won the World Cup, and ironically England scored a goal in the final against Beckenbauer’s team that was believed to be dubious. Geoff Hurst was the one who scored the goal, and from then on, Germany went in search of an equalizer while England hit them on the counter and won the final 4-2. Many believe it was sweet revenge for Germany after 44 years; however, Beckenbauer refused to compare the two incidents.

He added that there can never be a clear answer to whether Geoff’s goal was valid or not, because they did not have the technology at that time, but now even a child could tell that Lampard and England were robbed of a clear goal.

The German legend went on to say that he played the game at the highest level for a number of years, and he knows how teams work. But this was a no-brainer in terms of the final result. The 4-1 score line was flattering but deceptive, because if England had been awarded the goal, it would have been an altogether different 2nd half. When two teams are playing on level, the team strategy is entirely different, but England had to chase the game, and were exposed at the back. He went on to say that one doesn’t need to be an expert to judge that the disallowed goal was valid.

He added that he is delighted that Germany won. The manner in which they won, though, was in simple words not ideal.

After enormous criticism from all around, Sepp Blatter, the FIFA president, has at last admitted that there is a need for technology and FIFA will consider their options.

Beckenbauer believes that the game of football should be kept simple and away from outside influences, but replay assistance will make the game more transparent and much better.

Beckenbauer said that he is pleased that Sepp Blatter has finally realized that changes are needed, and hopefully the game will see a positive change in times to come.

There is another option being put forward to FIFA, one of which is to have additional referees, one of which should be placed behind the goal on either end.
