Fratangelo/Halebian, Karatsev/ Karlovskiy move into the quarterfinals of Boys' Doubles – French Open 2011
Bjorn Fratangelo and Alexios Halebian of USA battled past fifth seeded, Australian/Brailian team of Luke Saville and Joao Pedro Sorgi in three sets 7-6(4), 4-6, 10-7 in the second round of boys’ doubles event at French Open, Roland
Garros in Paris on Wednesday. Fratangelo and Halebian took an hour and 27 minutes to beat their opponents.
In the opening set, both teams broke each other twice in the first twelve games, taking the set to a tie-break. The Americans dominated the tie-break and claimed it 7-4. Fratangelo and Halebian hit 69 percent of the first deliveries
and bagged 70 percent of the points on them in the opening set.
Saville and Sorgi staged a comeback as they broke their opponents in the ninth game of the second set, sealing it 6-4. The Australian/Brazilian pair won 48 percent of the receiving points in the second set. The fifth seeds converted
three of the seven break points they received and saved one of the three break points they faced in the second set.
Fratangelo and Halebian clinched a couple of mini-breaks in the match tie-break to win it 10-7. The Americans kept their first serve percentage at 75 percent, grabbing 67 percent of the points on the first serve in the match tie-break.
Fratangelo and Halebian will take on Andres Artunedo Martinavarr and Roberto Carballes Baena of Spain in the quarterfinals.
In another second round match, Aslan Karatsev and Evgeny Karlovskiy of Russia came back from a set down to upset British/Croatian pair of George Morgan and Mate Pavic in three sets 4-6, 7-5, 12-10 to reach the quarterfinals. The
match lasted for an hour and sixteen minutes.
Morgan and Pavic broke the Russians in the seventh game of the first set, consolidating on it and sealing the set 6-4. The British/Croatian pair converted 46 percent of the returns into points in the opening set.
Karatsev and Karlovskiy came back in the second set, breaking their opponents in the fourth game to take a 3-1 lead. However, Morgan and Pavic responded quickly, breaking back immediately and holding serve in the next game to level
the score at 3-3. The Russians broke again in the twelfth game and won the set 7-5. The unseeded duo capitalised on two of the four break point opportunities they created in the second set.
In the match tie-break, the Russians clinched a late mini-break and consolidated on it to win it 12-10. Karatsev and Karlovskiy served brilliantly as they fired 82 percent of the first serves and grabbed 45 percent of the points
on them in the match tie-break.
The Russians will face Maxim Dubarenco and Vladyslav Manafov in the quarterfinals. Dubarenco and Manafov beat Thiago Moura Monteiro and Bruno Sant’Anna of Brazil in three sets 3-6, 7-5, 16-14 in the second round.
