Question:

Fraternization in the Navy?

I recently read the regulations of the military and I saw "No Fraternization." What is the definition of fraternization? And I am a pro-abstinence Christian who is definitely not having any sexual relations with anyone until I am married. So would socializing with a fellow Navy member be considered F? Or would it only be considered F if it was a male? What exactly can I do and not do?! I don't want to get degraded for something I wasn't even sure about. By the way I haven't even left for Boot Camp yet.

  1. it also can mean a non-sexual relationship too. Like if you were best friends with a superior officer (male or female) that would be bad for morale, people would think you were plotting something or sharing information secretly or the officer was treating you differently from the other sailors.

Basically you can be friends with people in your same ranking. And you can date enlisted folks in other branches, nobody in your chain of command.

  2. Fraternization, generally, refers to personal relationships between officer and enlisted members that are unduly familiar.

According to OPNAVINST 5370.2C, examples of unduly familiar relationships (i.e. fraternization) include dating, sharing an apartment or house, engaging in intimate behavior, gambling and borrowing money.

Fraternization is assumed to be (in your case) a male officer and a female (you) enlisted since fraternization between soldiers of the same s*x would be homosexual which would get you discharged.

  3. Fraternization falls under the general article, that's why it's tough to find.

Basically it can be any type of unprofessional relationship, whether friendship, romantic or otherwise, with someone outside of your pay grade.

Generally, the Navy goes by the two up, two down rule. Officers is an obvious NO, but as long as you keep all of your professional relations professional, as they should be, you will be fine.

All in all, there's much bigger fish to fry.

Fraternization isn't just a relationship with another member it can also be a friendship. The above link is from the Inspector general's website and talks not only of the policy but the different people it would apply to. Fraternization is most commonly an issue when 2 people are involved with each other and 1 is the supervisor of the other.

  5. believe me,you got bigger things to think about if you havent left for basic yet. but to answer your question, fraternizations usually refers to romance between enlisted and officers.
