Question:

Frazier vs Ali...did Frazier win all 3 fights?

A lot of people say Frazier won all 3 fights, or at the very least, 2 out of the 3. But Ali got the favorable outcome because of his popularity at the time. After watching all 3 fights, I am forced to agree with this analogy. I feel Frazier won 2 fights, with a 3rd fight "in question".

I just dont get how so many people though proclaim Ali the greatest with no question at all. If you watch a lot of his fights, he was, dare I say, overated. Dont get me wrong, he was a good boxer, but I think a lot of popularity as being "the greatest" had more to do with his mouth than his fists.

  1. Ali had a big mouth but he also backed it up and he could take a punch. He was the Greatest.

  2. Ali was well past his prime at that point. Remember Ali missed many of his best boxing years due to his protest of the Vietnam War..... Not saying that was right or wrong, but Ali in his prime was something to see, Ali the second time was more of a side show sustained by his mouth.

  3. Frazier didn't finish the third fight so Ali must have won that one!!!

  4. After watching the fights, you still say Frazier won 3? Were by chance you watching his Son, Marvis Frazier? Because Joe Frazier, In the three fights with Ali got his butt whipped GOOD in 2 of those fights! One of which he could not even answer the bell for the last round because he was so close to being beaten to death. He was hospitalized for 2 weeks after that fight, Not a winner in my eyes. Then the other fight in question, Ali landed 4 to 1 on the judges score cards. How can you say he won, when he was getting cracked in the face 4 times every time he landed a punch? It does not even make sense? Now I will give you that first butt-whippen he gave Ali. But you also have to remember that Ali had been laid-up for years before that fight, while Frazier was steadily fighting. That was all that Draft-Garbage Ali was involved in, The reason for him not fighting for those years. I say if he would have been active, Frazier would have NEVER even won a single-fight. He was good, But not the best. Ali was  better than him, even though one fight was lost by him. He clearly redeemed himself in the next two. That's the three fights I seen anyways, And I have been watching the sport longer than most have been alive in this forum. When I was a kid, It was the Radio, and the Brown Bomber as the Champ, Joe Lewis, so I believe that qualifies me to have an opinion at least. That's the way I call it anyways. Take Care.

  5. you have asked and answered your own question!

ali was indeed a great fighter but yes he was over rated..you cant argue with them that say otherwise as they are simply repeating what they have heard dont beat your head up over it

  6. Frazier definitely won the first fight and Ali definitely won the third one (by TKO).  People can argue about their second fight, and about both of his wins against Norton, but that’s not going to change the record book.

I don’t think Ali is overrated.  He was 31-0-25 when he lost his first fight to Frazier, and that was after a 3-1/2 year layoff with only two tune-ups (even then, it was a pretty close fight).  Three of his five career losses came after he had turned 36 (which is “old” for a fighter who depended on his speed and reflexes).

More important than Ali’s record is his competition.  He never ducked anybody, and many of his opponents were top-ranked contenders who were in or near their primes.  Putting aside comparative all-time “greatness,” it is fair to say that Ali in his prime was definitely one of the most dominant fighters of his or any other era.

If Ali could beat Liston, Frazier, Foreman and Lyle, he should have been able to handle Tyson.  Holyfield shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same breath as Ali.  Most of us admire Holyfield because he was “The Warrior” and had a lot of heart.  But what top-notch fighter who was in his prime did Holyfield beat when he was in his prime?

Many people who consider Ali one of the greatest fighters of all time are not “simply repeating what they have heard.”  I have seen all of Ali’s professional fights (on television, teleprompter or tape) and have seen many of his contemporaries and predecessors.  If he is not the “greatest,” he is one of a small number of finalists vying for that distinction.

  7. There's nothing questionable about the 3rd fight, dude.  Joe would have died in that ring without his cornerman stopping it.

  8. Joe won the first fight hands down, he was the young buck and Ali didn't know what to do with him, the second fight Ali out worked him, and the third fight was in my mind the greatest fight ever!  Both men were near death by the end of this epic battle, Frazier couldn't make it out for the last round but the 14 rounds they battled were tremendous, but i say Ali 2, Frazier 1.

  9. You must be kidding me. Joe want the first fight. The third fight his eyes were shut, he couldn't come out for the last round, so Ali won. The second fight was disputable but Ali clearly landed more punches. Joe Frazier was a short heavyweight so he usually take three punches to land one, his left hook was so hard that he would knock most people out but Ali could take his best shot. So Ali with the faster hand always outscore Joe. Also Ali KO George Foreman who made short work of Frazier.

  10. yea frazier had the style to beat ali , he had quick feet and was relentess at applying pressure and aggression and cutting off teh ring,

the first fight is when they were both closest to their primes and frazier one easily.

ali is a bit overrated only because he is rated so highly , based on accomplishment he still in my book qualifies as the greatest heavy weight of all time or close to it. but that is not to say their were not guys that could beat him , but then those same guys could be beaten by other  HW's  that Ali himself could beat , they all match up differently and styles make fights

frazier ,  and tyson and holyfield could beat ali ,

lennox lewis , and larry holmes i would say are even money with ali

Ali could beat , george foreman everytime , and i would also pick ali over joe louis and rocky marciano

and he would likely outbox wlad klitchko in an ugly boring fight as well.
