Fred Couples aims to bag another senior major title at the US Senior Open
The 2011 Senior Players champion Fred Couples aims to add another senior major title to his shelf when he tees off at this week’s US Senior Open, at the Indiana Golf and Country Club, in Lake Orion. The tournament will start on Thursday, July 12, 2012.
Couples is currently enjoying the best of his Champions Tour seasons, as he managed to record five top-10 finishes in just seven events that he has played so far.
His best performance of the season came in the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic, when he defeated Michael Allen with a one-stroke margin.
In addition to that, he participated in PGA Tour’s Masters Tournament and became the oldest player in the history of the game to lead the major while entering the final two rounds.
His last appearance so far came in the Constellation Senior Players Championship, where he tied for the fourth position.
Thereafter, he took a week off in order to take some rest, following a minor back injury. He told that he preferred not to play golf because it could have threatened his chances of making a good finish in the upcoming senior major event.
"I did not play any golf last week just to make sure coming in here that I could physically play and not be in too much pain or have too much trouble swinging," he said.
Despite the latest injury issue, Couples is currently one of the hottest favourites for a win in the 156-player field.
Last year, he managed to bag the first senior major title of his career, with a birdie on the third extra hole in the sudden-death playoffs against John Cook, at the Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship.
He said that if he succeeds in winning the US Senior Open this year, he will rank it just below the victory that he received in 1992 at Augusta National and the other two Players Championship titles.
"This would be right under it," he said.
In the meantime, the defending US Senior Open champion Bruce Fleisher has announced his withdrawal from the event because of a hand injury.
