Fred Couples and Greg Norman on the hunt for final pick for President’s Cup – Golf news
President’s Cup captain, Fred Couples is on his toes for the moment as the FedExCup Playoff Championship will swing back in action for its fourth and final leg the Tour Championship, presented by Coca Cola at East lake Golf Club. The 12-member team has yet
to enrol the final qualifiers who will play against the international team at Royal Melbourne.
Ten out of the 12 players on each team have automatically qualified for the coveted cup through the points based system, which analyses individual players’ performances for the whole year. Rest of the two players will be picked up on personal recommendation
of the captains of the two sides. Couples has already selected Tiger Woods almost a month back and has taken considerable pain to justify the otherwise widely criticised decision.
Couples made a conference call on Sunday and revealed that he is still waiting for young players on the tour to pull in something out of the box to change his decision. He is likely to go in favour of Brandt Snedeker, Bill Haas and PGA Championship winner,
Keegan Bradley. They have termed the troika as ‘the leaders in this three-ring circus’.
Couples said, “We still have another week, but that could easily change anyone's mind. I want these guys to know that The Tour Championship is still deciding my second pick.”
These three strong performers are not the only picks Couples would be hoping for. Some other players who have showed immense composure in the FedExCup Playoffs including Bo Van Pelt (13 on the FedExCup points table), Jason Dufner (14), two-time winner in
2011, Mark Wilson (19) and Gary Woodland (22) will be hoping to lift the massive $10-million title this weekend, and will in course, ensure a berth at the President’s Cup.
Bradley, although a prodigy on the tour who went all the way to lift a major title this year, has not been up to the mark in the following events.
Meanwhile, Greg Norman, better known as ‘The White Shark’, captain of the International team, has a lot of work on his hands too. Aaron Baddeley (14), Vijay Singh (15) and John Senden (17) are eager to be on the team and all three will be playing in Tour
Championship. Norman has also shown his liking for the Robert Allenby and Richard Green.
Norman said, “I don't think it's going to be a hard call to tell you the truth. I think at the end of the day, it's just talking to my guys. I look at the performance of players leading up to where we are here today or leading up to the point where I have
to pick the final two.”
The Cup is scheduled from November 17-20 at the Royal Melbourne, which also happens to be a happy hunting ground for the International team. They have won all the eight events held at this venue since 1994.
