Fred Couples concerned with Tiger Woods' knee injury
One of the most celebrated American Players and winner of the 1992 Masters at Augusta, Fred Couples says he is more concerned about Tiger Woods' health than his return to the top slot. The 51-year-old golfer, Couples was talking at a practice round before
the Memorial Tournament on PGA Tour and expressed his concerns about Wood’s left knee which has already undergone four surgeries and is still in bad shape.
"At Tiger's age, I'm more concerned about his body than his game," Couples said. "His game will come back. But it's hard to come back when you've got knee problems and hip problems and Achilles problems and all that stuff."
Woods is currently having all sorts of problems ranging from fitness issues to his deteriorating form on the course, coupled with a devastated swing and poor putting. The 14-major winner is the only player in history who has come anywhere near breaking Jack
Nicklaus’s record of 18 major wins, and has often cited that as the only inspiration that keeps him going.
Woods pulled out of the Players at TPC Sawgrass and was seen limping down the clubhouse later. He has already undergone four full-blown surgeries on his left knee and further work on it can cause severe and irreversible damage.
"I couldn't imagine not being able to use my left knee to play golf," Couples said. "I think it's basically impossible to do what you used to do. And in golf, that's the toughest thing. "I don't think he swings violent at it. I don't think he does anything
different than Charl Schwartzel when they swing."
Couples has already accepted the captaincy for this year’s Presidents Cup and hopes Woods will make it in the team on his own rather than being picked up by the captain. Woods recently dropped out of the Top 10 in Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) when
he withdrew from the Players.
The 14-major winner is still hopeful of returning to the Congressional next week for the second major of the season; The US Open. Top 50 players from OWGR will qualify for the championship scheduled from June 16-19.
