Fred Couples reluctant to let go of Tiger Woods for the President’s Cup
This may come as another blow to the already deranged fans of the once legendary Tiger Woods as the former star golfer is now all set to miss the President’s Cup of the season.
The rumour has been doing the rounds for several weeks as Woods, who was earlier scheduled to show up at the Greenbrier Classic on the PGA Tour this week, did not confirm his participation and there have been credible reports that he has not swung a club
since his withdrawal from the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass.
As much as the captain of the President’s Cup’s team, Fred Couples wants him to be on the team, Woods has done all the right things to make it almost an impossible scenario.
“If I tell you today that if he just plays fairly well I’m going to pick him, I can’t imagine that’s the dumbest thing anyone has ever said” Couples said. “And if I sit here and say, if he continues to play like he is, in my mind he will be the guy to say,
‘no reason to take me over there.’ He’s not a difficult guy at all.”
Couples and Woods’ relationship goes a long way in the early years when Woods started his trailblazing career in the lucrative sport. The duo has played numerous times on both sides of the Atlantic and has been part of the Ryder Cup and President’s Cup teams.
Couples has been hopeful of Woods' induction in the team since the start of the season but his deteriorating form and lingering injuries have made things all the more difficult to pull him in the squad.
Couples said at the beginning of the Memorial Tournament, “If he’s not ready to play, he’ll be the one to tell me.”
But after all the self-assuring statements, Couples have not received a green signal from Woods as yet. Many of the critics have already started targeting Couples for his rationale and ignoring the new band of golfers who have played impressive golf all
through the season.
Mark Wilson, who has already won twice on the tour this season as well as Lucas Glover and Gary Woodland have done well, both winning once on the tour. These players have not only played well but have been in contention in almost all the tour events and
have rarely missed a tournament. Woods have not played for the last two months, and have already missed the two majors of the year.
Though the final team has yet to be announced for the upcoming event, some of the players including Steve Stricker, Matt Kuchar, Phil Mickelson, Nick Watney, Dustin Johnson, Bubba Watson, Hunter Mahan Jim Furyk, David Toms and Bo Van Pelt are likely to make
it into the squad.
It would be quite convenient for Couples to dump Woods and move on to make his choice for the two reserve berths, he is well aware that in such a case, the event will lose its appeal to the masses for all the media hype Woods can generate.
