Fred Couples set for his debut in The Senior Open Championship in Turnberry
The US Presidents Cup team captain Fred Couples has confirmed to make his debut in The Senior Open Championship, presented by Rolex at Turnberry (Ailsa Course), Turnberry, Scotland, slated to start from July 26, 2012.
The former world number one is confident about a straight win in his first experience at Senior Open because of his experience in the regular British Open Championship in the past.
He came close to The Open Championship victory several times in his career, as he tied for the third position in each of the 1991 and 2005 editions. In addition to that, he also recorded nine top-10 finishes during his career.
Therefore, the former Masters champion now aims to rely on his past experience at the links course while making his first appearance in the third senior major event of the year.
According to him, Turnberry is one of the phenomenal golf courses around the world. Therefore, he expects a great competition ahead of him, especially when the participants include names such as Tom Watson and Bernhard Langer.
He also expects the wind factor to play an important role in affecting the final results on the leaderboard.
“I played in The Open there the year Greg Norman won, and he shot an unbelievable score one day,” he said. “So, you know, whether it's the Women's Open, the regular Open or The Senior Open Championship at Turnberry, it's going to be a hard, hard course,
especially when the wind blows”.
While talking to the reporters, he also explained the reasons behind his absence from the Senior Open Championship in the last two years.
He told that he was in Seattle, after he turned 50, where he participated in the US Open. Right after week, the Senior Open Championship was scheduled, which he skipped while preferring the local major.
Last year, he skipped all the events scheduled in July and August. Therefore, the Open also became a part of it.
“This year I'm going and I’m really looking forward to it,” he said. “I've been associated with Rolex forever and they're a sponsor of it, so I talked to them at the US Open and said I’m going to play”.
