Fred Couples shares the lead after the second round of the Masters – Golf News
Fred Couples, at the age of 52, fired a five-under par in the second round of the Masters Tournament to share the lead with Jason Dufner on Friday, April 6, 2012.
Couples started off on the back nine of the course and carded two consecutive birdies, starting from the 15th hole.
While playing the front nine, he did not have a good start as he carded a bogey on the very first hole. Yet, he bounced back strongly with two consecutive birdies on the third and fourth hole.
Moreover, he had the best streak of birdies in the second round as he finished with back-to-back three birdies. Overall, he succeeded in making seven birdies against two bogeys.
"It was a very, very magical day," said Couples, who is looking forward to becoming the oldest major title winner in the history. "I'm going to be right there with everybody on the weekend".
The world number two and three, Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy respectively, Louis Oosthuizen, Bubba Watson and Sergio Garcia were all just one stroke behind the leaders at four-under par overall score.
"I can't pay much attention to them. I've got to worry about my own game," Couples said. "If I come out here and play my game the best I can, I'll have a shot".
Julius Boros currently has the honour of being the oldest major winner, as he won the 1968 PGA Championship at the age of 48.
Similarly, Jack Nicklaus holds the record of being the oldest winner of Masters that he earned in the 1986’s edition at an age of 46.
Until now, Couples is going in the right direction. Moreover, he has already taken the honour of being the oldest player to lead the Masters after second round.
Earlier, the record was held by Lee Trevino who set the mark in 1989 at an age of 49.
Couples is currently enjoying the best of his forms as he registered a win in the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic, a 50-and-over Champions Tour event.
Therefore, he may give a tough time to his competitors, especially the ones like Westwood, McIlroy and Garcia, who are hungry for a win in the Masters.
