Fred Couples takes halfway lead at the Constellation Senior Players Championship
The US team captain for the Presidents Cup, Fred Couples, fired a seven-under par 63 in the second round of the Constellation Senior Players Championship to take the halfway lead on Friday, June 29, 2012.
Couples got off to a stunning start and recorded four birdies over the first six holes that he played.
Thereafter, he parred five holes prior to suffering the only bogey of his round, on the 12th hole, followed by a birdie on the very next hole.
The highlight of his performance on a hot sunny day includes three consecutive birdies to end the round that helped him take a one-stroke margin over Joe Daley. He now boasts an eleven-under par 129 score after two rounds.
"The heat helps," said Couples, the 1992 Masters champion. "I have some heat on my back to start the day, and then being hot and humid certainly was a good thing".
According to Couples, he felt stiffness throughout the opening two rounds because of the anti-inflammatory injections that he had two weeks ago.
However, his game spoke a different story. He hit 34 of 36 greens and birdied the par-five second and 18th hole in both rounds.
"It was a great day full of a lot of good shots, but a couple long putts were made," Couples said, who won the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic early this March. "Any time you're going to shoot a low round on a course that I think is like this, you're going
to have to do that".
He now plans to remain consistent in the remaining two rounds to hold the eighth trophy on the 50-and-over tour.
In the meantime, Daley sank nine birdies against three bogeys to record a six-under par 64. He now leads the field in number of birdies scored (16) during the tournament.
Over the past four rounds that he played on the Champions Tour, including the final two rounds of the Senior PGA Championship, he has a combined score of 22-under par.
He told that there were a number of birdie chances available on the course and he made the most out of it.
