Fred Couples will assist Davis Love III in 2012 Ryder Cup
Fred Couples, the victorious US captain in the last two Presidents Cups, has confirmed that he will assist the Ryder Cup team captain Davis Love III at this year’s event at Medinah in September, 2012.
Couples made the statement in a press conference where he was present to make an official announcement of being the Presidents Cup captain again for the 2013.
"I'm going to help Davis, I think," Couples said. "I don't know if that's out there yet, but I believe he's pretty much put that out there".
Couples also showed his interest of succeeding Love as captain in the 2014. At the Dubai Desert Classic early this year, he said that he wants to get a chance to lead the US team in the Ryder Cup in the next few years.
“Maybe in the next two or four years, I’ll get a shot at it," Couples. "But they are going to name another Presidents Cup captain in another month, and I know they’re all pushing for me to do it again, so I’m all for that. But obviously I would love to be
a Ryder Cup captain, there’s no doubt”.
He also said that he was quite excited to get an opportunity to lead the US Team in the Presidents Cup for the third time in his career.
Currently, Jack Nicklaus holds the record to captain the US Team in four of the nine events held so far. He was also the captain of the Ryder Cup team in 1983 and 1987.
Therefore, Couples now wanst to get close to Nicklaus record and adding another victory to his name in one of the prestigious team events around the world.
In the meantime, when he made the announcement of being the assistant for Love in the Ryder Cup, the PGA of America’s senior director of communications and media relations, Julius Mason, has said that Davis has not decided about his assistant yet.
"Davis hasn't made a decision on who is going to be his assistants yet," Mason told to an online news agency.
This means that Couples is the first one to break the news and no one else except him, and Love knows about this.
