Fred Funk wins Insperity Championship presented by United Healthcare - Golf News
Fred Funk carded a five-under par 67 in the final round of the Insperity Championship presented by United Healthcare to end a long victory drought and hoisted the trophy on Sunday, May 6, 2012.
While entering the final round, Funk was tied for the top position with Tom Lehman. He started off with a birdie on the very first hole.
Later, he pared 12 holes until the birdie on the 13th hole. The 14th and 15th and 16th hole also witnessed him make birdies in style, followed by another one on the last hole of the tournament.
In the meantime, Lehman also managed to score five birdies at the Woodlands Country Club in Texas. However, a bogey on the par-four 10th hole spoiled his chances to force the game into playoffs, in the end.
It seems that the venue is too much lucky for Funk as he won the first ever PGA Tour event of his career in 1992 when he hoisted the Shell Houston Open trophy. The same year saw him meet his second wife, Sharon.
Now, he recorded a victory after suffering multiple injuries for the last three seasons.
He had to have his knee operated in 2009 along with the staph infection that he suffered the same year. Last year, he was in hospital for two thumb surgeries that sidelined him from numerous tournaments.
"I wasn't sure whether I was going to have a career," Funk said. "I've been really blessed with this opportunity to play again, and play at a high level. I didn't want to give up yet. I love it too much".
On the other hand, Lehman believes that the game completely turned on the 15th hole when his approach found the green and he had to settle for the par shot in the end.
That was a point when Funk was on his peak and was registering birdies continuously to get a lead over him.
"The whole tournament kind of turned on 15," Lehman said. "I haven't been this disappointed after a tournament in a long time".
Mike Goodes was three strokes behind Lehman to take the third spot on the leaderboard.
