Fred Wilpon discusses New York Mets’ money problems – MLB News
The majority owner of New York Mets’ Fred Wilpon seems more open then ever before as he is talking about his franchise’s money related issues in the media and hoping for a better beginning from now on.
During a media talk, he told reporters about certain issues that lately are hurting the franchise related to Ponzi scheme and on which many Mets’ fans and experts are also criticising them. He described that the critics are stating in the media that the Mets’ organisation should have taken some research before involving their finances into some kind of new investment scheme.
Wilpon’s response was brief as he said, "We're OK, They shouldn't be concerned about us owning the franchise, because we intend to own the franchise for a very long time. Whether they're happy about that right now or not, I don't know."
He added, "My intention is always to follow what the baseball people [say]. In spite of what you all used to say that we were running the baseball department, [general manager] Sandy Alderson has a great feel for this. So does [manager] Terry [Collins]. And if it works out, I would be thrilled. I think there's no finer guy. He's just a very fine young man.”
Wilpon also told the media as some progress has been made regarding sale of minority shares of the team, but he is not sure that how long this process will take to complete. In other words, he tried to say that the Mets have some internal issues to resolve first. Currently the Mets’ have completed their 40-man roster, but some internal issues of extending players’ contracts are the main hurdle while Wilpon still needs some time to figure it out.
The minimum payroll of the franchise is another area of concern for the Mets. Last season, when they exceeded the maximum payroll amount, baseball commissioner Bud Selig intervened and somewhat told them how to create a little room resolving this late issue that occurred fearing a solid penalty. However, Wilpon has still some two months left before he can actually take some serious and significant decisions. Once the season gets under way, it will be hard for him to take things under control.
