Freddie Meadows and Noah Erickson emerge triumphant in first round at Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro
Swedish surfer Freddie Meadows and America’s Noah Erickson made the Round 2 (Round of 96) cut at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 3-Star Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro after walking away with top honours from their respective Round 1 (Round of 112) heats that went down at the main event site of Playa de Pantin in Galicia, Spain, on Wednesday, September 12.
With Meadows taking the win in the fifth heat, Venezuela’s David Diaz had to settle for runner-up place, which proved sufficient to take him through into the next round as well. His compatriot Rainel Bravo finished in third place, while Spain’s Francisco Mendiolago had to settle for fourth place. Both the surfers were ejected from the event as a result.
The sixth heat saw French Polynesia’s Heremoana Luciani finish behind Erickson in second place to accompany the latter into the next round. Great Britain’s Luis Eyre and German’s Alexander El Naib rounded out the bottom-two positions, thus getting eliminated from the competition.
The two-to-three foot waves on offer at the primary event site presented the young guns from around the globe with plenty of challenge, making it really tough for them to get their hands on big scores.
The fifth heat pitted Meadows against Diaz, Bravo and Mendiolago in a four-man battle for the Round 2 spot.
As the battle got underplay, the Swedish surfer got off to an impressive start, earning a 5.50 off his first business-wave and went on to add an additional 7.17 points to his account, thus finishing with a heat-total of 12.67 points.
Bravo and Mendiolago finished with a heat-total of 7.53 and 3.54 points respectively, consequently getting eliminated from the competition.
The next heat saw Erickson walk away with the win after getting the better of Luciani, Eyre and El Naib in a battle for survival.
The American surfer drew first blood with a 6.50-point ride and went on to back it up with a 5.23-point ride, thus finishing with a winning heat-total of 11.73 points.
Luciani finished third after earning a 5.67 off his first business-wave and adding an additional 3.97 points to eventually finish with a heat-total of 9.64 points.
Eyre and El Naib ended up finishing in bottom-two position after registering a heat-total of 8.43 and 0.93 points respectively.
