Freddie Roach: Manny Pacquiao great fighter and Amir Khan going in right direction – Boxing news
The Master Roach, Freddie Roach, who is one of the most well known boxing trainers in the world, has shared his views on the sparring sessions between the new unified WBA and IBF World Light Welterweight Champion, Amir Khan and the eight-division World Champion,
Manny Pacquiao.
The 24-year-old Khan, who recently knocked out the Super, Zab Judah, in the fifth round to claim the IBF title on July 23, 2011 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, sparred with the Fighting Pride of Philippines Manny Pacquiao ahead of his bout
as Judah was a southpaw and Manny is a southpaw as well.
The 51-year-old Roach, who trains both Pacquiao and Khan, commented on the sparring sessions. He told the media it is always good to see Khan and Pacquiao sparring together but on the same note, he said Manny takes over Khan as the session goes the distance.
Roach remarked Khan, who is widely known as King Khan, gives Pacquiao very tough time in the early rounds but as the fight prolongs a bit Pacquiao takes him over with his experience.
While speaking on his inclusion, he said, “When they spar it's always good but, while Amir is more than able to hold his own, as it progresses Manny takes control.”
Roach however admired Khan by saying he is a great boxer who always wants to learn something and therefore the trainer reckons he is going in the right direction.
“Amir has developed so much since I started working with him. Manny is a great fighter but Amir is certainly going in the right direction - that's a fact,” he said.
Khan, who has won 26 of his 27 professional fights including 18 by the way of a knockout, is due for one more fight in December 2011 before he goes up in the weight division at 147lbs. Many think he can bring them mega showdowns against Manny Pacquiao or
the five-division world champion, Floyd Mayweather.
However, Roach does not want Pacquiao and Khan fighting each other at the moment since there are other options available to the Brit.
