Freddie Roach: Manny went home and he is in really good spirits – Boxing News
Hall of Famer trainer Freddie spoke about his favourite fighter Manny Pacquiao to The Guardian, asserting that Manny went to his country (The Philippines) in good spirits. Pacquiao lost to his nemesis Juan Manuel Marquez via sixth round knockout, leaving
the three-time train of the year dismayed.
It was not the first time Roach saw his fighter being knocked out this year. Prior to the Pacquiao fight, it was Briton fighter Amir Khan who was knocked out by American unbeaten fighter Danny Garcia. While Pacquiao had the courtesy to take the blame for
his mistakes, Khan put it on Roach and moved onto work with a new trainer, Virgil Hunter.
“Manny went home [to the Philippines] and he's in really good spirits. We haven't made any decision what we're going to do yet, but we will discuss it,” said Roach.
“If Manny can't pull the trigger or it is obvious he hasn't got it any more, yes, I think I'd like him to retire,” he added.
“If I thought that I would say it, but I didn't see that in the fight. It's the best fight he's fought in a long time. I think, in fact, he was on his way to winning the fight,” said Roach while talking about Pacquiao’s performance against Marquez.
Surely, Pacquiao was at his best, giving the Mexican all the beating he could bear. By the fifth round, Marquez had a broken nose but he managed to pull it off.
Pacquiao was leading the show with just one round out of his bag until he walked into Marquez’s trap. He was knocked out cold and laid on the canvas for several minutes motionless. The defeat was a disappointment for Roach, who had warned Pacquiao about
Marquez’s counter punches. The Filipino did admit the fact that he got a little overconfident, which made him walk right into it.
For now, Roach wants things to settle before he makes a move. He wants to see how Manny will pull of the aftermath of being knocked out, and if things go well, he believes the Pac-man will be back again.
