Freddie Roach believes Khan should stay away from Pacquiao – Boxing News
Although Freddie Roach usually plays a fatherly role for his fighters, it seems like this time he has sworn to say it all out for Khan. After four years of association with Khan, Roach has finally been fired by the Briton, leaving the Hall of Famer no way
out but to speak his heart out.
Roach collaborated with Khan at a very crucial period of the Briton’s career, following his knockout to Breidis Prescott. Khan remained unbeaten for two straight years once he was with Roach but it did not last long. This year, back in July, Khan lost to
American unbeaten fighter Danny Garcia via fourth round knockout. The defeat was a career devastating for Khan and instead of reflecting on his mistakes, he tried to cover it up by putting the blame on Roach.
He then spoke of firing Roach on and off and finally, last week Khan revealed that he is no longer with the Hall of Famer trainer. According to Khan, Roach concentrates on Filipino fight sensation Manny Pacquiao a little too much, ignoring the Briton’s wellbeing.
Well, Roach believes Pacquiao certainly deserves being looked after, since he has made him proud.
In a recent interview, the Hall of Famer came up saying that Khan should stay away from Pacquiao, as the Filipino is a puncher and he can easily knock Khan out.
“I wish Amir all the best - but stay away from punchers and my guy's (Pacquiao) a puncher,” said Roach in an interview with livefight.com.
“I think technically Virgil Hunter looks like a very good trainer. But can somebody change another person? I don't think so.”
“I tried for a very long time to get Amir Khan to settle down, with no success. He likes to exchange a lot - and I don't think that's gonna change.”
For now, Khan has indicated that he might join forces with Virgil Hunter, trainer of Andre Ward. However, he has not officially announced his next trainer. Khan, in a very sweet public statement, wished Roach best of luck and thanked him for his support
throughout the past four years.
