Freddie Roach creates a strategy to bring Peterson down – Boxing News
According to Hall of Famer coach Freddie Roach, Lamont Peterson produced the best fight in his life against Amir Khan in December. However, the coach thinks Peterson will not be able to do it again.
Freddie Roach, trainer for Manny Pacquiao and Amir Khan, says he has a great plan to bring the IBF and WBA super lightweight champion down. According to Roach, “He fought the fight of his life. I watched a lot of tapes on Peterson, he never fought better.
I never saw that guy in tapes and I've got to give him credit, he fought a h**l of a fight. I was actually happy for him in a way, he's a really nice kid and his story is very compelling. I think we laid on the ropes a little too much. When he gets on the
ropes he has that passive defence, there's really no counter punching off it. Peterson went to the body, was scoring points.”
Roach further said that even when Peterson was not scoring anything, it was still looking like he was in control since the other guy was falling on the ropes. According to Roach, when the other guy is on the ropes, it looks like the one in the ring is winning
but it was not really the case against Khan.
Therefore, according to Roach, this time Khan will have to be a bit more careful and instead of putting himself on the ropes, he will have to stand in the centre and beat Peterson there. Lastly, Roach said by using some right uppercuts and that Khan’s uppercuts
will be a lot important in this fight.
Khan lost his titles to Peterson through a split decision in December. The decision followed heavy controversy and Khan filed a petition with the IBF to revoke it. However, the IBF ordered an immediate rematch. For now, Khan is scheduled to fight Peterson
on May 19 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas for the combined titles. If Khan wins, he will grab his titles back from Peterson. However, if Khan loses, he will last his last opportunity to get back the titles.
