Freddie Roach declares bounty on Manny Pacquiao, Julio Cesar Chavez looks to take up offer
Freddie Roach has upped the stakes for Manny Pacquiao’s sparring team.
In preparations for his November 13 bout with Antonio Margarito Roach has declared that any sparring partner who can drop Pacquiao will get $1,000 dollars from his personal check book.
WBC silver middleweight titlist Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. relayed the information to Fanhouse.com, saying that he’s eager to collect on the offer.
While respectful of “Pacman,” Chavez doesn’t put his cards on Pacquiao knocking Margarito out. He believes that Pacquiao will either win by close decision, or it will be the “Tijuana Tornado” who does the knocking out.
"Freddie Roach is paying $1,000 dollars [to knock Pacquiao down],” Chavez explained. “I think Pacquiao will win by decision or Margarito by knockout."
Chavez is set to take on Alfonso Gomez on December 4. The bout will headline a Top Rank pay-per-view that will take place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
On the fight he recently said: “I have followed Alfonso’s career and I know he’s a great fighter with a lot of heart. Alfonso was my favorite fighter on the “Contender” show and I was rooting for him to win. The real winners on the night of the fight are
going to be the fans.”
The Anaheim event will also feature super bantamweight superstar Nonito Donaire, who will take on former titlist Wladimir Sidorenko. Donaire is currently rated No.4 fighter in the world by noted establishment The Ring Magazine.
Many have criticized Julio Cesar Chavez of late for failing to compete against worthy opposition. Perhaps in response to the talk, Top Rank chief Bob Arum said today that if Chavez gets by Gomez his next opponent will likely by WBA junior middleweight titlist
Miguel Cotto. A fight of that magnitude would be entirely new to Chavez and an opportunity to finally prove he isn’t the product of careful promotional pampering.
