Freddie Roach hints Amir Khan and Floyd Mayweather clash in May 2012 – Boxing news
Freddie Roach, who is the trainer of eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao and the currently unified World Boxing Association Super and International Boxing Federation Light Welterweight Champion Amir Khan, has hinted Khan has leapfrogged his stablemate
Pacquiao in the queue to fight the undefeated American legend, Floyd Mayweather.
Mayweather’s camp earlier in November 2011 confirmed that Mayweather, who is a five-division world champion and the current World Boxing Council World Welterweight Champion, wants to return to the ring on May 5, 2012 and it was being expected he would finally
set up a super-fight with Pacquiao.
However, it now appears as if it is going to be King Khan who will fight Mayweather because Pacquiao probably will be fighting Juan Manuel Marquez for a fourth time after he claimed a twelve-round controversial majority decision over Marquez.
“It'll be a great fight for us I think,” Roach, who also trains Pacquiao, told Sky Sports. “And I would love that fight next at 147 [lbs, the welterweight limit]. At 147 Amir would be bigger, stronger and more resilient than ever.”
Meanwhile, the Bolton’s finest, who will take on Lamont Peterson in his concluding fight at 140 pounds on December 10 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, Washington D.C, also thinks his mega-fight with Mayweather can happen in 2012.
Moreover, the Brit, who carries a record of winning 26 of his 27 professional fights, including 18 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, believes he will provide Mayweather will a tough night.
“That fight can happen within the next nine to 12 months,” Khan said. “It's a fight that I want, the fans would love to see that fight. Against me Mayweather would have problems and it would be a tough fight for him. By the time that fight comes I'll be
25 - I'll be stronger, more experienced, and it'll come at a great time for me.”
Floyd Mayweather versus Manny Pacquiao is a fight which every boxing fan desperately wants to see but Mayweather’s clash with Khan would also pull a large crowd into the arena. Anyways let’s see who fights Mayweather in 2012.
