Freddie Roach predicts Amir Khan will be the next pound-for-pound king – Boxing news
American boxing trainer and former professional boxer, Freddie Roach, reckons the WBA super lightweight champion Amir Khan is better than the eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao.
Roach, who works with both Manny Pacquiao and Amir Khan, told the media that Khan, who is widely known as King Khan, is only 24 years old and is a much better boxer than Pacquiao was at his age.
The Fighting Pride of Philippines, Manny Pacquiao, who is the current WBO Welterweight World Champion (Super Champion), is rated as the number one pound-for-pound boxer in the world.
However, the Irish-American trainer thinks Khan is getting very close to Pacquiao in a very less time. Therefore, he has claimed Khan is going to be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world very soon.
The Master Roach stated Pacquiao took a long time to be at the place where he is right now but Khan has been with him just for the last three years and he has a lot of respect for him.
“Amir is little bit more ahead of Manny,” Roach said on Tuesday. “It took Manny Pacquiao eight years to get to the point where he became unbeatable and he has dominated every fight. Amir has been with me for just three years now and he’s getting closer and
closer. He will become the pound-for-pound king within a couple of years.”
The Brit, Amir Khan, is currently scheduled against the current IBF light welterweight champion, Zab ‘Super’ Judah, for a potential bout on July 23, 2011 in Las Vegas and Roach has picked Khan over Judah.
The 51-year-old trainer revealed Khan is training very hard and is already ahead of the schedule and Judah will have to be at his best, if wants to survive against him in the ring. He believes Khan’s win over Judah will be another step towards greatness.
“He is well ahead of schedule and a big win here against Zab (Judah) would be another step towards Manny’s record,” he said.
