Freddie Roach reckons Amir Khan has the speed to outclass Floyd Mayweather – Boxing news
Amir Khan’s trainer Freddie Roach, who is one of the most well-known trainers in the world, reckons his fighter has the speed to outclass the five-division world champion, Floyd Mayweather.
The Bolton’s finest, who is widely known as King Khan, knocked out former five-time world champion, Zab ‘Super’ Judah, in the fifth round recently to become the new unified IBF and WBA Super light welterweight champion of the world.
It was a dominant performance from the 24-year-old Khan, as he made a proper use of his speed and kept Judah in the defensive mode for most of the time. He was also leading him on all three scorecards in the first four rounds.
Roach now wants Khan to move up to 147 pounds category but he wants him to fight one more time in December 2011 before he goes up the weight division. However, in the 147 pounds division Roach is aiming for a clash with Mayweather and he believes Khan can
topple the Pretty Boy.
While speaking on his inclusion, he said, “He's struggling a little bit to make the 140lbs weight and when he moves up to 147lbs he will be stronger, more powerful and more resilient. I do believe Amir's speed can trouble Mayweather.”
Mayweather is currently set to meet the Vicious, Victor Ortiz, on September 17, 2011 and Roach wants the winner to face Amir Khan.
Roach remarked, “We'd love to take on the winner of his fight with [Victor] Ortiz. Mayweather isn't fighting until September and it can't happen right away, so I'd like to slip one more fight in there before then.”
In the end, the 51-year-old Master Roach stated he is certain that in the next few years Khan will also become the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
“In my mind he can be the next Manny Pacquiao, there's no doubt about that,” said Roach. “I think he can succeed Manny as the next pound-for-pound champion.”
