Freddie Roach reveals he left Khan camp for Chavez – Boxing News
Amir Khan’s trainer Freddie Roach admits he left Khan’s camp for four days to train with Chavez Jr. In addition, Roach revealed he was warned by Khan’s camp against the situation happening ever again.
“I spent a lot of time with Amir in the Philippines with Manny, but then, his rematch with Lamont Peterson got canceled. We sent him home for three weeks so he wouldn't burn out,” said Roach regarding the issue of Khan’s overtraining.
When asked about Khan’s complaint of not giving him enough time, Roach revealed, “And then, we got the offer to fight Garcia, and they accepted the fight. I had the time and I worked with him every day. I missed four days being with Chavez.”
He added, “So they asked me-- they said they didn't want that to ever happen again. I said, 'if you think I'm doing too much, then, for the next fight, we'll do the best that we can with scheduling.”
However, Roach declined the notion of being the reason for Khan’s knockout defeat against Garcia. According to Roach, the four days he missed with Khan did not really affect the training in its entirety.
Khan lost his WBA light welterweight title to Danny Garcia on July 14 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. The British-Pakistani fighter was knocked out in the fourth round, compelling the referee to stop the fight.
Khan was initially in control, but during the third round he dropped his guard allowing Garcia’s fierce hook to hit him in the neck. The shot was devastating enough to land Khan on the mat. The Bolton proud came back but could not get hold of himself.
In the fourth round, Khan was knocked out twice before the fight was stopped.
This was Khan’s second consecutive loss. He lost to Lamont Peterson in December last year and now to Danny Garcia. The young Bolton fighter is upset over his downfall, especially with suggestions of fellow fighters calling him to retire.
As of now, Roach believes it was Khan’s mistake that got him in trouble, and not Garcia’s intelligence.
