Freddie Roach says David Haye is an asset for heavyweight division – Boxing News
The five-time Trainer of the Year, Freddie Roach, reckons the World Boxing Association’s World Heavyweight Champion, David Haye, is one of the most entertaining boxers to watch in the ring.
Roach, who currently trains the eight-division world champion, Manny Pacquiao, believes the Hayemaker is one of the best pugilists in the ring today. Roach, who trains at the Wildcard Gym, told the media that Haye has the enthusiasm and gets into the ring
to fight.
While speaking about the upcoming fight between Wladimir Klitschko and Hayes, he said, "Haye's the best thing for the heavyweight division right now, because he comes to fight, he comes to win, and he's a puncher.”
The 30-year-old Londoner will step into the ring against the International Boxing Federation’s, World Boxing Organisation’s, International Boxing Organisation’s and Ring Magazine Champion, Wladimir Klitschko, on July 2 at the Hamburg Arena in Germany and
Roach thinks it is going be a spectacular bout between both combatants.
Though the 51-year-old Irish-American trainer stated he has trained Wladimir Klitschko and is a good friend of him as well, he said Klitschko is a boring fighter who doesn’t want to risk much. He also said the same about his brother Vitali Klitschko.
He remarked that heavyweight boxing should be about aggressive tactics. He believes that safety plays are not the best approach in the ring at the weight class.
He continued, “I don’t see David Haye as the underdog in this fight. I trained Wlad Klitschko, he is a friend, and so is David Haye a friend of mine. It’s one of the best fights out there, and a good fight for the heavyweight division.”
"That's what heavyweight boxing should be all about. The Klitschko brothers are great boxers but they are boring. They don't take risks. You've got to go for it in this sport, and give 100 per cent,” said Roach.
The Wladimir-Haye fight is being considered one of the biggest in British history. However, all that is left to see is whether if Haye can dispose of the Ukrainian giant in front of a crowd of over 50,000 people.
