Freddie Roach says Victor Ortiz did the right thing against Floyd Mayweather – Boxing news
Freddie ‘Master’ Roach, who is one of the most well-known boxing trainers in the world, believes Victor Ortiz did the right thing against the five-division world champion and the current World Boxing Council world welterweight champion, Floyd Mayweather.
Roach thinks Mayweather forced Ortiz to head-butt him.
Mayweather and Ortiz met each other in a highly anticipated fight on September 17, 2011 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada before the great fight was cut short as it ended in a controversial fourth-round knockout.
It was Ortiz who intentionally head-butted Mayweather but when he went on to hug his opponent as an apology he received two devastating punches which knocked him out.
The 51-year-old Roach, who is currently the trainer of the eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao, and the currently unified IBF and WBA light-welterweight champion Amir Khan, stated Ortiz wanted to bring Mayweather out of his game plan. However, Roach
deems Ortiz’s only mistake was that he became too apologetic.
Roach was quoted by Boxingnews.com as saying, “I think Victor had the right idea – to rough him up. That’s why I think he butted him, he was just way too apologetic. I think he should have got on with the fight and maybe, head butted him again because that’s
the way to beat Mayweather, to take him out of his game. He frustrated him with that head butt. You could see him complaining and crying, but you can’t be compassionate. This is a physical game. Ortiz got caught up in it and it cost him.”
The 34-year-old American superstar, Mayweather, who now holds a marvellous record of winning all of his 42 professional fights, in which 26 of them came by the way of a knockout, is known as one of the most difficult fighters to hit in the ring because of
his flawless defensive techniques.
The 24-year-old Ortiz on the other hand is a fighter who likes fighting toe-to-toe. Therefore, it is fair to say whatever Roach has said is right to some extent.
