Freddie Roach shrugs off rumours of split with Amir Khan – Boxing News
Rumours have been circulating for a while now regarding Amir Khan’s possible split with Hall of Famer trainer Freddie Roach. However, Roach denies any such planning on Khan’s end.
Freddie Roach met Khan and his father Shah Khan on breakfast yesterday. The trio discussed the scenario, with the possibility of Khan changing trainers. According to Roach, Khan and his father are not in the favour of letting him go but they definitely are
considering better sparring partners.
“I spoke with Amir and his dad yesterday, and the idea of changing trainers never came up. I told them that if they think that I'm too busy, and 'if you need help getting somebody else, then I'll help you,” said Roach who offered Khan assistance for getting
a new trainer if the Bolton proud is not satisfied with him.
He added, “They said, 'no, no, everything's fine.' They said 'we just need to just maybe we want to get better sparring partners.”
“So I had a very nice breakfast with Shah Khan and Amir. So we had a nice meeting yesterday, and no one talked about getting fired.”
Despite Roach’s confidence in Khan, many publications have reported Khan talking about changing his trainer along with his training regime.
Following his July 14 knockout defeat at the hands of Danny Garcia, Khan believes he needs better training and more time from his trainer. According to the British-Pakistani fighter, the travelling involved in training with Freddie Roach keeps him away from
focusing entirely on his training. Khan believes it would be better for him to be in his hometown and spend most of his time training, instead of travelling to the USA every now and then to train at Roach’s Wild Card Gym.
For now, Roach has shrugged off indications of Khan changing his trainer. However, considering Khan’s recent losses to Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia, it is apparent that the Briton needs better training, especially when it comes to his defence.
Probably, Khan will stick to changing sparring partners for now but another loss to his portfolio will force him to part ways with Freddie Roach.
