Freddie Roach takes a shot at Amir Khan – Boxing News
It seems like Hall of Famer coach Freddie Roach has had enough of Amir Khan’s taunts. Roach, who is going through a rough patch in his coaching career with a 5-fight lose streak, spoke of Khan and his new trainer. Khan claims Virgil Hunter, his new trainer,
has improved his defence skills but Roach is not so confident about it.
“We'll see how good his defence is in this fight,” said Roach, who according to Khan is unable to coach anymore due to his Parkinson’s disease.
“That's not really it, though. What upset me more than anything was that he said I had declined because of my Parkinson's. It's bullshit, and I'll tell you why. They said to me if I fired Manny Pacquiao and made Amir No1 [in the gym], they would keep me
on as the trainer. That's the reason,” Roach added while talking to The Guardian.
“Is it my fault that he stays in the pocket too much? Molina's a good fighter. He better not take him lightly. It's a tough fight,” he added when asked about Khan’s defence.
For now, Roach has a heavy heart as his fighters have taken him on a never-ending streak of losses. He was expecting the streak to be broken by his favourite fighter Manny Pacquiao but it did not. Instead, Pacquiao ended up with a knockout loss as well.
Roach is hoping for the Filipino to make a comeback but he is not confident about it. When asked, Roach revealed that Pacquiao would return to his gym to see if he is fit to fight or not. If Roach believes Pacquiao is not in the mode anymore, he will ask
the former WBO champion to retire.
For now, Roach stands at a point where he sees his coaching career on a decline. He spoke of retiring in 2013 earlier this year, when he was the best coach in the world. Now, if he retires, he will have to leave the sport with a heavy heart, as his fighters
have let him down recently. Roach needs to kick-start it once again, only if his fighters still have it in them.
